De Europese Commissie wil het wettelijke verbod op dierproeven voor cosmetica uitstellen. Op dit moment mogen deze testen nog gedaan worden tot 2013, nu zal het mogelijk zelfs tot 2018 of 2019 duren voordat ze verboden worden. 
De reden voor dit zeer onwelkome besluit is om twee ‘nieuwe’ dierproeven toe te voegen om de ‘veiligheid van producten’ te garanderen.
De Anti Dierproeven Coalitie is woedend op deze vertraging. Dierproeven kunnen geen productveiligheid garanderen omdat ratten, muizen en konijnen anders reageren op stoffen dan mensen. Dierproefvrij en mensspecifiek onderzoek is de enige manier. Er liggen al talloze producten in de schappen die bewijzen dat dit kan!
We roepen iedereen op om de voorbeeldbrief te sturen naar de President van de Europese Commissie, Mr. Barroso en zijn staf. Genoeg is genoeg!

Dear Mr Barroso and staff,
We, the citizens of the European Union, have campaigned tirelessly for 30 years to achieve a ban on the use of animals in cosmetics tests. All of this hard work has culminated in the adoption by the European Commission of a historic piece of legislation – the 7th amendment to the Cosmetics Directive (76/768/EEC).
We now call upon you to fulfil this obligation by enforcing a total ban on all animal tests for cosmetic use by 11 March 2013. We reject any attempt to postpone this deadline, based on the following points:
1. It is unacceptable to cause animal suffering for the sake of human vanity
2. Animal tests belong in the 19th century
3. They are unreliable and irrelevant for human health
4. Modern scientific methods are already available
5. The use of human data, based on a tiered testing strategy and a weight-of-evidence approach, will always outweigh animal data
There is no shortage of funding and no shortage of scientific innovation. The only obstacle to progress is political will.
